Vehicles with some element of electric propulsion are increasingly common around Woodbridge, Vaughan, Brampton, Kleinburg, Mississauga, and the Greater Toronto Area. Still, all are in different classes than the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. The E-Ray marks the 70th anniversary of the Corvette brand, and it’s the first Corvette ever to feature an all-wheel-drive and an electrified powertrain. Although the name could give you the idea that the E-Ray is all-electric, this stunning new car is a gas/electric hybrid that will change your perception of that technology forever.
Stunning performance is the starting point for any new Corvette, but nothing the renowned brand has produced over 70 glorious years comes close to what the 2024 Corvette E-Ray can deliver. While a combined 655 horsepower doesn’t make the E-Ray the most powerful car in its class on paper, you’ll have to look long and hard and pay substantially more money to find this level of performance anywhere else. The E-Ray gets from 0 to 96 kph in just 2.5 seconds, and the quarter-mile takes just 10.5 seconds at 209 kph.
This staggering performance gets delivered by a hybrid system that employs a 6.2-litre LT2 Small Block V-8 gas engine, a permanent magnetic drive electric motor, and a 1.9 kWh battery. The gas powerplant sends 495 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque to the rear wheels, while the electric motor gets mounted on the front axle offering an extra 160 horsepower and 125 lb.-ft. of torque for the front wheels. The combined 655 horsepower isn’t class-leading by any means, but the almost instantaneous torque provided by the electric motor results in performance that has to be experienced to be believed.
At first glance, it would be easy to confuse the stunning exterior styling of the E-Ray with other current Corvettes, especially the Z06. But closer examination shows the E-Ray marks Corvette’s 70th anniversary in its own unique style. The E-Ray is available in coupe and convertible body styles, with 14 exterior colour options and four alloy wheel finishes available. Other styling cues that make the E-Ray stand out include an exclusive body-length stripe package in Electric Blue; standard carbon flash badging; black exhaust tips; bright badging; and carbon fiber ground effects are also available to make the E-Ray your own. Cutting-edge carbon fiber wheels are also available in carbon flash, visible carbon fiber finish, or visible carbon fiber with a red stripe.
You can forget the inconvenience of plugging in the E-Ray as the 1.9-kWh lithium-ion battery recharges itself using regenerative energy from coasting and braking during everyday driving. And the E-Ray’s advanced technology means the driver doesn’t have to worry about what’s going on with the hybrid powertrain. Six driver-selectable modes manage the amount of electric assist provided. The six available modes are Tour, Sport, Track, Weather, My Mode, and Z-Mode, and the driver chooses the appropriate mode for the circumstances, and the E-Ray does the rest. A Charge+ feature is also available that maximizes the battery’s charge state when selected.
It’s also worth noting that the E-Ray has a “sensible” side. Many standard features that make more mundane cars safer are present, such as Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, and Automatic Emergency Braking. The E-Ray also features standard Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 with three distinct suspension settings, a Brembo Carbon Ceramic braking system for the kind of braking ability this level of performance demands, and an Active Fuel Management system that employs the electric motor to extend four-cylinder operation in various driving conditions.
It should only take a brief look at the E-Ray and what it can do to realize this is a car where demand will be off-the-scale, and supply will get outstripped on a grand scale.
