Many people shopping for a compact SUV in Woodbridge, Vaughan, Brampton, Kleinburg, Mississauga, or anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area will never go off-road. Most still want that rugged, muscular SUV style, even though the on-road ability is far more useful than hardcore off-road capability. The 2023 GMC Terrain offers the rugged exterior SUV styling that shoppers want but with a strong focus on upscale interiors, superb on-road driving manners, and excellent safety credentials, which are what any vehicle needs for life in the urban jungle.
There are four trim levels in the 2023 GMC Terrain lineup, but upgrade packages are also available so shoppers can tailor the Terrain to suit their style and needs. The range begins with the entry-level SLE trim, followed by the SLT, AT4, and top-of-the-range Denali. Most people associate Denali with luxury, comfort, and style. Even though the Terrain is the gateway model to the 2023 GMC SUV lineup, the range-topping model more than lives up to that stellar Denali reputation.
The entry-level Terrain SLE is standard front-wheel drive with all-wheel drive available as an option. Meanwhile, the SLT, AT4, and Denali versions of the 2023 Terrain get AWD as part of their standard specification.
It wouldn’t be unfair to suggest the 2023 GMC Terrain looks like a full-size SUV shrunken into a smaller and more manageable offering, but there are many other reasons why the Terrain is an ideal vehicle for operating in the town and city. Every 2023 Terrain gets the same engine, which is a new 1.5-litre turbo-four that puts out 175 horsepower and 203 lb.-ft. of torque, which is five horsepower more than the previous version.
The power goes to the front or all four wheels through a quick-shifting nine-speed automatic electronically controlled transmission, with overdrive and gear range select to deliver smooth, effortless automatic shifting. The turbo-four engine provides the compact Terrain with plenty of power and an enjoyable driving experience, along with the kind of fuel economy that’s often responsible for attracting people to these smaller models in the first place. A front-drive Terrain is good for 9.7 L/100 km in the city and 8.1 L/100 km on the highway, while AWD only makes a slight difference with ratings of 9.9 L/100 km and 8.3 L/100 km, respectively.
The 2023 GMC Terrain may not be classified or priced as a full-blown luxury model, but people have yet to tell the Terrain. Every model boasts a generous standard specification, and the all-important infotainment system is one of the best around. A 7.0-inch touchscreen is standard in the entry-level SLE. However, the SLT and higher models get upgraded to a larger 8.0-inch unit, and every model features Bluetooth, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The AT4 doesn’t cost much more than the SLE and SLT models, which could make it the sweet spot for value for many shoppers.
But if you are considering buying the AT4, pay attention to that you are tantalizingly close to the opulent Denali at the top of the range. The Denali features a standard 8.0-inch multi-colour reconfigurable driver information screen, adaptive cruise control, Automatic Parking Assist, premium Bose audio, HD Surround Vision, a head-up display, heated front and rear outboard seats, and a heated steering wheel. And, of course, you are also treated to perforated leather-appointed seating embellished with Denali logos.
The 2023 GMC Terrain is a compact crossover SUV that checks all the right boxes as a stylish, safe, well-equipped, and comfortable way for up to five people to navigate the urban jungle.
